Atiku Abubakar's Trenchant Critique of the Detention of Senator Tambuwal.

In a paradigm of egregious partisanship, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, erstwhile Governor of Sokoto State, ostensibly due to his affiliation with the opposition coalition. This draconian measure constitutes a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration's endeavour to harass, intimidate and decimate the opposition.

His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, GCON, a stalwart champion of democracy and probity, has been vociferous in his denunciation of the Tinubu administration's blatant abuse of power. In a recent statement, Atiku highlighted the stark reality unfolding before us today, wherein the state and its operatives have assumed the roles of a bully by instrumentalising the fight against corruption as a political agenda.

The sole raison d'être for the EFCC's detention of the former Governor of Sokoto State, is his membership in the opposition coalition. The detention constitutes a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration's agenda to harass, intimidate and decimate the opposition, Atiku averred.

Atiku further posited that the objectification of the fight against corruption as a political stratagem to coerce opposition leaders into the ruling party is a perversion of the noble objective for which the EFCC was established. According to the former vice president, Nigeria is witnessing a burgeoning trend wherein the state and its operatives have assumed the roles of a bully by making corruption and the fight against it a political agenda.

Atiku also underscored that the EFCC's actions have been utilised to coerce opposition state governors into the ruling party and that this trend shows no signs of abating. Whilst the genuine fight against corruption warrants the unequivocal support of all Nigerians, the objectification of it as a political agenda merits unequivocal condemnation from civil society spaces and friends of Nigeria in the international community.
